What is a Routing Number?
Routing numbers are 9-digit numbers that banks use to identify themselves. Think of them as an address that lets other banks know where to find your money.
You need your routing number for many tasks, including:
- ACH payments
- Setting up direct deposit
- Receiving benefits from the government, including tax refunds
- Transferring money between accounts at different banks or investment firms
- Automatic bill payment
- Domestic wire transfers
Many banks have more than one routing number, especially if they have branches in more than one state. Citibank, in particular, has branches throughout the United States and uses different routing numbers for different regions.
How to Find Your Citibank Routing Number
Here are several other ways to find your Citibank routing number:
Use a Check
For checking accounts, you can find the routing number in the lower left-hand corner of the checks corresponding with your checking account. It's the first 9 digits located at the bottom of the check.
Go Online
Visit the "Account Details" page after logging into your account. Click on "View Image" for a posted check. Citibank provides access to checks written within the last 18 months.
For a savings account routing number, check a recent bank statement via your online portal.
Call Customer Service
Call Citibank at 1-888-248-4226. After you provide a few specific details to identify yourself, a representative will be able to confirm your account's routing number.
Although your debit card is associated with a bank account, you do not use a routing number for debit card transactions. Routing numbers are only used for transfers directly between bank accounts.
Likewise, credit cards do not have routing numbers since they are not directly linked to any bank account. When you pay your credit card online, you may need to use your bank account routing number to set up the link between your credit card account and checking account, like you would for any other bill.
Domestic/International Wire Transfers
Friends, family, or even businesses can wire funds to your Citibank account. Wire transfers are a faster way to send money than an ACH transfer. They typically cost a small fee.
In order to wire funds, you'll need to register for an online account with your Citibank account. You can then click on Transfers and enter the required information below.
Domestic Wire Transfers
If the wire transfer is within the US, use your corresponding bank routing number (from above).
But some incoming domestic wire transfers require different routing numbers. Be sure to double-check that you have the correct one.
You'll also the following information to send a domestic wire:
- The name of the person to whom you're wiring funds (the "beneficiary")
- The name and location of the beneficiary's bank
- The ABA number of their bank (if you don't know it, don't worry; Citibank provides a searchable list of ABA numbers)
- The beneficiary's account number
International Wire Transfers
To transfer money from abroad, either to or from your Citibank account, you'll need a SWIFT CODE. These are the international equivalents of U.S. routing numbers. Citibank's SWIFT code is CITIUS33.
You'll also need the following to send an international wire:
- The name of the person to whom you're wiring funds ("the beneficiary")
- The name and location of the beneficiary's bank
- The beneficiary's account number
- The currency of the beneficiary's account
- The Bic Code or SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication), SORT code, or other type of routing information (depending on the country).
- Domestic Money Transfers
Use the ABA routing number for the state of your Citibank branch bank. - From a Foreign Account into a U.S. Citibank Account
You'll also only need the ABA routing number of the recipient bank. - From a U.S. Account into a Foreign Account
You'll need the Citibank SWIFT code, which is CITIUS33.
Cheaper and Faster Way to Send Money Internationally
The quickest and cheapest way to send money internationally is to use a money transfer service (instead of Citi).
Bottom Line
You'll likely need your Citibank routing number when managing your finances. Keep it handy should you need to set up a direct deposit, automatic payment, or wire transfer.
